Since the ultimate cause of reflux remains unknown, there is no reliable way to prevent its occurrence. However, there are ways to reduce the likelihood of reflux occurring if you have GERD. Several common foods that can worsen reflux symptoms in those who are prone to reflux include fatty foods, spicy foods, chocolate, caffeine, garlic, onions, tomato sauce, salsa, chili, citrus fruits, carbonated beverages, alcohol, caffeine, and mint flavoring. Also, eating large meals or lying down soon after you eat can also increase reflux. Certain medications may also worsen reflux such as some sedatives, tranquilizers, and high blood pressure medications.
