While it is still unclear why some people develop CTS and others do not, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of developing the disorder. Treating underlying health conditions that can increase the risk of CTS such as thyroid problems and rheumatoid arthritis may help prevent the disorder. Avoiding jobs that require repetitive wrist motions and include gripping can also help prevent CTS. If you do work such a job, you may be able to reduce the impact of the repetitive stress by taking frequent breaks every 15 to 20 minutes to give your fingers and wrists a rest. Even if these breaks are brief, gently stretching your fingers and wrists may help. You can also help by reducing your force and relaxing your grip as much as possible while still safely performing your duties.
