Avoiding exposure to the HSV-1 and HSV-2 viruses is the best way to avoid contracting genital herpes. The best way to prevent infection is to abstain from sexual activity or to limit sexual contact to only one person who is infection-free. Other ways you can limit your exposure to HSV include:
- Avoid having unprotected sexual contact with a person who has an active genital herpes infection.
- Use a latex or polyurethane condom during all sexual contact.
- Limit the number of sex partners you have.
Herpes may also be spread from mother to child during delivery so if you are pregnant it is very important to be tested. Genital herpes that is transmitted during delivery can have devastating health effects on the newborn including blindness, brain damage, and even death. If you do have genital herpes, the doctor may recommend taking antiviral medication near the end of your pregnancy to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak at the time of delivery because the risk of mother-to-child transmission is higher if you are experiencing an outbreak. If an active outbreak occurs around the time of delivery, the doctor may recommend a Caesarean section.
