If you have blisters or sores in the anal or genital regions, see your doctor to be tested for genital herpes. A doctor may be able to diagnose genital herpes based upon the appearance of your sores. Additionally, a sample of the fluid from a blister can be taken and examined for the presence of HSV. If you are not currently experiencing an outbreak, a blood test can be used to detect the virus. The available blood tests examine your blood for the presence of antibodies directed against HSV-1 or HSV-2 and thus can determine with high accuracy if you are infected and which type of HSV you are infected with.
