There is no cure for HPV infections. However, in most cases the infection is eventually rooted out by your immune system.
If you have an HPV infection that causes warts, there are treatments that can take care of them. For warts in places besides the genitals, these include freezing the warts with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy), applying salicylic acid, a prescription medication called imiquimod (Aldara), laser removal, or surgical removal. The treatments for genital warts include these methods and also podofilox (Condylox), a cream that may destroy the genital wart tissue, trichloroacetic acid, and electrocautery.
If you have a high-risk HPV infection, your doctor may recommend more frequent screening for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is usually very treatable when it is caught early so it is important to be screened frequently for early cervical changes. If a Pap test does find high-grade pre-cancerous changes to the cervix, there are several treatments that can remove these and thus prevent them from progressing to becoming cancerous.
