The onset of the menstrual cycle — called menarche — usually begins in girls between the ages of 8 and 15, with an average onset age of 12. Generally, girls get their first period about two years after the onset of breast development. For many girls, menarche does not occur until after they have reached a body weight of 100 pounds.
