A doctor can tell you if you have pink eye or another
condition that is affecting your eye. Anytime your eye or eyes become red an
inflamed for more than a day or two, it could be pink eye. The doctor will
likely ask you several questions to help determine the cause of your eye
irritation. They may ask you about allergies, exposure to chemicals or
solvents, or your history of certain chronic diseases to rule those out as
possible causes of the inflammation. They may also ask if you have recently
been around anyone who had infectious pink eye.The doctor may also take a sample of eye secretions from your conjunctiva for laboratory tests in order to determine if your eye inflammation is caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Depending on the results, the treatment he or she prescribes will likely be different.
