Pink eye makes the white portion of the eye appear red or pink due to the inflammation of the conjunctiva membranes. This is usually accompanied by pain or irritation in the affected eye. Other symptoms may include:

  • swollen eyelid
  • blurred vision
  • sensitivity to light
  • burning or itching of the eye
  • a scratchy feeling like something is in your eye
  • discharge from the eye

Pink eye that is caused by a viral infection usually produces a clear watery or mucous discharge while bacterial pink eye often produces a thicker, yellow-green discharge.
