Pink eye (also called conjunctivitis) is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the sclera — the white portion of the eye — and the inner surface of the eyelids. The inflammation makes the sclera appear red or pink, especially near the corners of the eye and is usually accompanied by mild pain or irritation.
Pink eye is fairly common, especially among children. It carries a low risk of complications and usually does not affect vision or cause any lasting eye damage. However, it can be quite contagious and may spread quickly in institutional settings like schools. Some cases of pink eye may go away without treatment but others types require treatment to resolve. It is important to see a doctor if you or your child has pink eye symptoms to obtain proper treatment and ensure that there are no serious complications.
