You may suspect you have ringworm if you notice a red raised rash in the shape of a circle in any of several places on your skin. Over-the-counter anti-fungal products are available that can help treat fungal infections. However, a trip to the doctor can tell you for sure if your condition is indeed ringworm and not some other skin disorder such as psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.
When you visit the doctor, he or she will likely ask you questions to determine if you may have recently come into contact with the fungus that causes ringworm. The doctor may also take scrapings from the infected area to examine them for the presence of fungus. A doctor can often diagnose athlete’s foot and jock itch based on the appearance of the infected skin alone.
