For most people who are otherwise healthy, Salmonella infections usually resolve by themselves in five to seven days without medical treatment. Doctors recommend drinking lots of fluids to replace those lost to diarrhea. If diarrhea is severe, intravenous fluids may be necessary. To help alleviate abdominal cramping, avoid milk products and stick to bland, easy to digest foods like bananas, rice, apples, and toast.
If the infection spreads beyond the intestines, antibiotics may be needed. Many Salmonella strains are resistant to many types of antibiotics due to use of antibiotics in animals raised for human consumption. Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or amoxicillin (Amoxil) are often used and may need to be taken for as little as two weeks or as long as six weeks.
