Vaccines (also called immunizations) help people produce immunity to infectious diseases before those diseases are ever encountered. If a person gets a vaccine against a certain infectious disease and then they are exposed to that disease, in most cases they will not become sick. Vaccinations are usually given as shots but some may also be given in a nasal spray or sometimes as an oral booster.
